Sixteen years ago, I began researching The Encyclopedia of Jerry Garcia Music Venues.
It remains the only book that combines all of Jerry’s side band dates and Grateful Dead performances, organized by venue.
Arranged alphabetically by state, it features over 1,300 venues—including rehearsal spaces, recording studios, performance halls, living quarters, planned or canceled show sites, and even events Jerry attended as a guest. Yes, there are several scuba diving venues, too!
The history of each venue is thoroughly explored: architects, builders, owners, opening night lineups, notable performances, murals, statues, prosceniums, backstage areas, pipe organs, secret rooms, hidden tunnels, restorations, and demolitions.
Jerry’s connection to each space is documented in detail—covering the bands he played with, setlists, opening acts, and more—to help the reader imagine what went down at each date on every tour. In many cases, using dated photographs, I’ve identified the specific guitar Jerry played and added other great anecdotal details fans love.
I've also included eyewitness reports for as many dates as possible. They're numerous, hysterical, and heartwarming.
Thousands of footnotes are included to verify the research.
I’ve gathered over 1,120 high-resolution venue photos, all approved by more than 900 photographers. I’ve worked with college and public library special collections, historical societies, museums, Flickr contributors, and several renowned photographers.
There’s also a section devoted to Jerry’s artwork.
Now picture this: a high-quality two-volume set, reminiscent of an old bible. With 9x11 gold-embossed hardcovers and 2,200 gold-gilded pages, this book feels like a record of medieval pilgrimages to sacred sites. Centuries from now, people will want to know where it all happened. Now they will.
This will surely become a collector's most prized bookshelf treasure. It is the definitive record of Jerry Garcia’s musical legacy in a book that’s "built to last".
